WIRRAL-based men’s mental health charity Mersey Mind Project proudly took part in the Mental Health World Cup 2026 at Goodison Park, joining dozens of teams from across the country in a powerful event dedicated to raising awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.

Held on:- Friday, 22 May 2026, the tournament brought together 42 teams competing across seven groups, with Mersey Mind Project proudly representing Belgium throughout the day. The team produced an impressive performance on the pitch, winning 3 of their 5 matches and finishing 3rd in their group.

Mersey Mind Project dedicated their participation to Nathan Jones, who tragically died through suicide in June 2025. A passionate Everton supporter, Nathan’s connection to Goodison Park made the occasion particularly meaningful for both his family and those taking part. Players and supporters were united in honouring his life while continuing the important conversation around men’s mental health.

The charity’s squad of 8 players and 2 coaches were cheered on throughout the day by Nathan’s family, supporters and fellow participants. With sunshine overhead and a fantastic atmosphere around the stadium, the tournament showcased the positive role football can play in bringing people together, encouraging conversations and supporting wellbeing.

Nathan’s cousin Catherine Jones said:- “Nathan was only 37 when he passed away last year. We weren’t aware he was feeling like that so it came as a big shock as we’re such a close family. He was a lovely, bubbly lad who adored his wife and 3 kids. He always put others 1st and lived for his family. He masked it really well as we had no idea he was in such a dark place.”

She continued:- “He was a massive Everton fan so it’s quite fitting that this tournament was held at the stadium he spent years attending. We were all really touched by the event and it’s great to see what Mersey Mind Project and the Mental Health World Cup are doing to raise awareness. I just wish he knew about these things and the support out there when he was alive.”

Beyond the action on the pitch, the event raised an incredible £111,000 for charitable causes and helped shine a spotlight on suicide awareness, mental health support and the importance of encouraging people to speak openly about their struggles.

Mersey Mind Project’s Chris Guy said:- “The day was a reminder of the unique power of football to unite communities, break down barriers and provide support during difficult times. I’d like to thank the organisers, volunteers, supporters and everyone who attended the special and memorable occasion.”

Mersey Mind Project have been working hard to combat loneliness and isolation, offering free football sessions, a fitness boot camp and The Listening Space peer support sessions to help men get out and connect. The charity, which launched in 2025, has already supported hundreds of men across the region by creating safe, welcoming spaces where they can connect, talk and improve their wellbeing.

The organisation has pledged to continue supporting Nathan Jones’ family in their efforts to raise awareness of suicide prevention and encourage more men to speak up and seek help when they need it. The charity is open to any men who are struggling to reach out and get involved in their free activities and community initiatives.
