Are you ready for British Summer Time?
By Newsroom
News  |  Fri - March 27, 2026 1:57 pm  |  Article Hits:58  |  A+ | a-
DON'T forget that this year the British Summer Time (BST) starts on:- 29 March 2026, at:- 1 am.

Ever thought why clocks in spring change from GMT to BST at:- 1 am, yet in winter it changes at:- 2 am from BST to GMT? This annual changing of hours to put forward and back clocks looks odd and is confusing leaving many asking:- "what time should I put your clock forward?"  Well, it is to ensure that when the clocks turn back, it does not move the time back to the previous day.

Often you hear people debating why we need spring forward, autumn fall back anyway?  Why not just keep Greenwich Mean Time, as it's the World Standard Time anyway?

The purpose of this came around to increase leisure time and working hours, align our clocks with summer's longer daylight hours.  This idea was 1st advocated in:- 1907, by builder William Willett.  Yet, it wouldn't be fully adopted until:- 1916, during World War 1, when practice was used to save coal and energy resources by reducing the need for evening lighting.

Why do we continue to use this practice?

Despite occasional calls for, change, there is no, national consensus on this topic.

In reality the primary purpose remains to extend sunlight into the evening during warmer months and reverse over rhe winter months is still for economic and social reasons, balancing daylight hours for different industries. Generally  for leisure and business. Also, Scotland often prefers different timings to Southern England due to its Northern latitudes due to safety reasons as well. It is said that the changes significantly decrease road traffic incidents.

Often you hear that this twice yearly change disrupts your body's natural circadian rhythms, but in reality, this has been proven not to have any major impact.  So, even this doesn't generate the motivation for changing the way we workout our time.

Do you think moving the clocks hands around is good or bad for our nation's safety and economic growth?  What are your thoughts on this annual dilemma?
