Hundreds supporting Ukrainian Day in Southport 'a reminder we are not alone'

PEOPLE have been thanked for supporting Ukrainian Day in Southport in such huge numbers, with organisers saying “it was a reminder that we are not alone”.

Hundreds of people called into the welcoming celebration of Ukrainian culture at The Atkinson, on Lord Street, with activities to explore and experience across all 3 floors of the building.

This event marked the 4th anniversary of the Russian invasion and the outbreak of the Ukraine War.

The day opened with a minute’s silence to remember all those who had died. This was a moment of reflection and remembrance, and a symbol of unity and hope.

It was followed by Ukrainian songs by Ukrainian adults and children wearing traditional costumes.

Guests were then invited to join members of the Ukrainian community at a Coffee Morning, inspired by the idea “bake a cake – bring it – share it”.

This was a relaxed and welcoming space for conversation, where people met over a cup of tea or coffee, shared stories, and simply spent time together. Visitors were also able to sign their messages on a Ukrainian flag.

Families enjoyed a series of hands-on workshops, where they were able to actively engage with Ukrainian culture. They included a Motanka doll workshop, a glass painting workshop, an embroidery on wood workshop, and a varenyky (dumpling) making workshop.

There was a children’s art exhibition, featuring drawings by children from Sefton expressing their thoughts about war and the idea of home.

People admired the extremely moving ‘Where I Should Be’ exhibition which told the story of Ukrainians who live in the UK, yet remain emotionally rooted in their homeland.

It featured photography by Nina Karetska, who won the Sefton Diversity and Inclusion Awards at the 2025 Grand Pride Of Sefton Awards for her impressive determination to champion Ukrainian culture and bring together the Ukrainian community in the borough.

Organisers were very grateful for the support of Southport Rotary, who volunteered and supported organisers throughout the day.

Ukrainian Day organiser Ninas Karetska said:- “Ukrainian Day was not just an event for us. It was a reminder that we are not alone. Over these past years, I have met so many incredible English people who genuinely care. People who want to listen, who want to understand, who sometimes have tears in their eyes when we speak about what is happening in Ukraine today. People who pray for peace for our country. Your compassion gives us strength. Your kindness helps us keep going. When we feel tired or heartbroken, your support reminds us why we must stay strong — for our families, for our children, for our homeland."

She continued:- “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to The Atkinson Gallery and to Jo Chamberlain. For years now, they have stood beside us, opening their space and their hearts. Their continued support means more than words can say. We are truly blessed to have such friends. I would also like to thank the Rotary Club members who came to support us. Your presence mattered. Your solidarity matters. Knowing that respected members of the local community stand with Ukraine gives us hope and reassurance. And of course, my heartfelt thanks go to our Ukrainian community in Southport. I know how heavy each heart can feel. I know how much pain many carry inside. And yet, you wear your vyshyvankas with pride, you sing, you smile, you hold each other up. You show the true spirit of Ukraine — resilience, dignity, and light even in the darkest times. We believe that one day we will return to a safe, peaceful and free Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!”
