THE construction of the brand-new Newton-le-Willows Police Station has reached another major milestone today as the building is formally handed over from contractors Morris & Spottiswood to Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner and Merseyside Police.

The purpose-built neighbourhood policing base, has been completed, on time and within budget, following a 10-month construction phase and replaces the existing building, situated just 50 metres northwest of the current facility, which has served the community since the 1970s and is now outdated and no longer fit for purpose.

Today’s handover signifies that the station is ready to begin internal preparation, with furniture due to be installed and final technical checks, before the new police station opens and becomes fully operational in the coming weeks.

Designed to enhance community engagement, improve operational efficiency, and equip the local policing team with cutting-edge facilities to better serve and protect the residents of Newton-Le-Willows and surrounding areas, whilst supporting officer wellbeing.

Located at the junction of Market Street and Peel Street, within the Earlestown Conservation Area, the new station has been built to reflect and enhance the town’s historic character, incorporating a terraced-style design, double gable-ended roof and red brown brickwork. Drawing on extensive community consultation, it replaces the outdated 4-decade old facility which no longer met operational needs.

Once operational, the modern station will feature:-

• A welcoming General Enquiry Office
• Interview and meeting rooms
• Sustainable, energy efficient technology supporting Merseyside Police’s Net Zero ambitions
• Improved working conditions for officers and staff

 
Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell said:- “Today’s handover marks a significant moment for Newton le Willows and for neighbourhood policing across Merseyside. This building has been designed with the community at its heart; modern, accessible, and built to serve local people for generations. This is a great step forward for Newton-le-Willows and Earlestown and a clear demonstration of our commitment to community-focused policing, giving our officers a modern, central base in 1 of the busiest parts of the town, helping to improve visibility, engagement, and response times, while also providing a welcoming, accessible space for the public to speak to their local policing team."

She continued:- “This new facility represents more than just bricks and mortar; it symbolises our unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our communities and it is the physical evidence of our determination to ensure Merseyside Police is equipped to handle the challenges of policing today and into the future. I’m very proud that we are delivering on our promise to improve policing facilities across the region, ensuring our officers and staff have the tools, space and environment they need to do their jobs safely and effectively. With the construction phase now complete, we can look ahead to opening the station and welcoming the public very soon.”

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Rob Carden said:- “Today is an exciting step towards the opening of the new station, when we will be able to officially welcome the public. The Newton-le-Willows station will help us continue to deliver neighbourhood policing to our communities, which is at the heart of all we do. The location will enable us to better engage with and respond to those who need us most and give the public more of an opportunity to speak to their local officers. Improving our facilities is also vital as we continue to meet the changing landscape of a modern police force. It will be up-to-date, sustainable and energy efficient, supporting both the working needs of our officers and staff, and Merseyside Police’s Net Zero ambitions.”

Cllr Trisha Long, St Helens Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, said:- “This new police station represents a real investment in the safety and wellbeing of residents in Newton le Willows and the wider area. St Helens North MP, David Baines added:- “This new police station is a major boost for Newton-le-Willows and Earlestown, giving local officers the base they need to be visible, responsive and rooted in the community. It’s a strong vote of confidence in our town and in neighbourhood policing. I’m particularly pleased to see the design reflect the character of the Earlestown Conservation Area while delivering the high-quality, sustainable infrastructure our town deserves.
