WORK is due to start on Speke Hall Road later this month as Liverpool City Council begins a programme of improvements to a number of key routes across the City.

The Council has appointed Aureos Highways to carry out the works, which are scheduled to begin:- Monday, 16 February 2026, and are anticipated to take 26 weeks to complete.

The works form part of the Liverpool City Region’s Key Route Network Levelling Up Programme, the aim of which is to improve the reliability and resilience of key routes across the City Region, while supporting the Council’s commitment to maintaining and improving its highway network for all users.

The 1st few weeks will involve surveys and investigations, meaning lane closures with temporary traffic lights. People travelling through the area should allow extra time for their journeys.

The works that follow will see sections of the road resurfaced, drainage improved, traffic signals and street lighting upgraded at key junctions, and pavements and pedestrian crossings improved to make the route safer and more accessible.

Councillor Dan Barrington, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity said:- “This investment in Speke Hall Road is an important step in improving safety, accessibility and journey reliability for everyone who uses this key route. By upgrading crossings, pavements and signals, we’re creating a safer environment for pedestrians while also tackling congestion and improving traffic flow. We know roadworks can be disruptive, and we appreciate people’s patience while this essential work takes place."

A series of engagement events will take place, where residents and businesses will be invited to hear more about the programme with the opportunity to discuss the impact and ask questions. The dates for these drop-in sessions are:-

  • Thursday, 12 February 2026, 4pm-8pm – Simpson Ground Leisure United
  • Tuesday, 24 February 2026, 4pm-8pm – Speke Training and Education Centre
