The results saw Labour hold the seat, with Labour Party candidate Julia Garner duly elected with 495 votes.

The Green Party candidate Jack Colbert received 385 votes.

The Reform UK candidate Darcy Iveson-Berkeley received 141 votes.

The Conservative Party candidate Katie Burgess received 48 votes.

The Workers Party candidate Ian Smith received 40 votes.

1 paper was discounted due to voting for more than 1 candidate.

The turnout was just 12.39% with 1,135 votes being verified.

The Member of Parliament representing that part of Sefton, MP Peter Dowd on hearing the results commented:- "Congratulations to Litherland ward’s new local Labour Councillor Julia Garner for her decisive win! I look forward to working with her in the future. "

In response to the news of the win, Liverpool's Councillor Nick Small said:- "Good to see Labour holding Litherland in neighbouring Sefton, seeing off a challenge from the Green, UKIP, Lib Dem and Independent."

Background to the By-Election:-

Tweed was 1st elected to Sefton Council in 1992 and was Sefton's Civic Mayor for the year 2008/09.

We are told that Paul Tweed was at home on:- 14 May 2024, when a search warrant was executed by Merseyside Police for them to search the 62 year old's home.

Paul Tweed's resignation soon followed the former Labour Party Councillor having pleaded guilty, at Wirral Magistrates Court, on:- 25 September 2024, to 3 counts of making indecent photographs/pseudo-photographs of children at his home between:- 9 September 2020 and 13 May 2024. He also pleaded guilty to the possession of indecent photographs of children.

Tweed, formally of York Close in Netherton,  was sentenced on:- Wednesday, 6 November 2024, to 9 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, by Judge Healey. We are told that the judge also ordered him to undertake 30 days' work with the Probation Service, the statutory victim surcharge, and that he would be subject to notification requirements for the next 10 years.

Calls have since been made for Sefton Council to introduce DBS checks for all Councillors following the sentencing of Paul Tweed.
