LGA statement about Council Tax rises
TODAY the Local Government Association (LGA) has issued a statement in connection to the rise in Council Tax.

Speaking the behalf of the LGA Cllr James Jamieson, Chairman of the Local Government Association, which represents more than 350 Councils across England and Wales, said:- “An increase in Local Government core spending power will help councils deal with inflationary and other cost pressures they face next year. However, it is based on the assumption that councils will raise their Council Tax by the maximum permitted without a referendum. We have been clear that Council Tax has never been the solution to meeting the long-term pressures facing services; particularly high-demand services like adult social care, child protection, and homelessness prevention. It also raises different amounts of money in different parts of the country unrelated to need and adds to the financial burden facing households. This is the 5th 1-year settlement in a row for Councils, which continues to hamper financial planning and their financial sustainability and many councils are still grappling with significant challenges when setting their budgets and trying to protect services from cutbacks due to the deep underlying and existing pressures they face. Councils want to work with government on a long-term funding plan which ensures they have adequate resources, certainty, and freedoms to deliver local services for our communities.“ var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-5165542-3']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (function() { var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true; ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'https://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js'; var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s); })(); |
