‘Councils best placed to make decisions with communities’ – LGA on Low Traffic Neighbourhoods review

RESPONDING to reports the Prime Minister has ordered a review of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, Cllr Linda Taylor, Local Government Association Transport Spokesperson, said:- "Councils are on the side of all road users and residents, and are working hard to tackle congestion, make our air cleaner, and improve the quality of life in their communities.  We want to work with the Government to achieve this. It is important that we consult with all residents and businesses to find the best solutions to ease congestion and improve air quality for everyone. However, it is councils who are best placed to make decisions with their communities in improving the lives of people and businesses. As democratic organisations, they continually review all kinds of services and schemes based on local circumstances. Therefore, a national review is unnecessary. Only with long-term certainty of funding and consistency of government policy can councils invest confidently in transport schemes and help meet the Government’s own target of 50% of urban journeys being walked, wheeled or cycled by 2030."

I think the idea is a good idea on paper only. Electric vehicles will occupy an important place in a world moving on from fossil fuels, but we are moving too fast to tick political boxes and not looking at the wider picture. We are overlooking the long-term impact of moving everyone to electric vehicles, on both an environmental level and also a practical level. And that is not forgetting the financial impact. We must look at hydrogen cars, as they are easier to make, and the infrastructure is easily modified to deliver it. Also, hydrogen cars offer a longer driving range than electric cars and trucks, yet the UK does not have a single public electric charger or hydrogen refilling station dedicated to delivery vans or lorries! ULEZ is just a tax and not a true environmental policy. Let's hope we avoid them in our area.
