THIS week British citizens who are planning a getaway to the continent are being reminded that they must prepare for a significant shift in border protocols.

Starting from the final quarter of 2026, UK nationals will be required to obtain an ETIAS travel authorisation before entering 30 European countries. This new system mirrors the Electronic Travel Authorisation recently introduced by the UK Government for foreign visitors. The EU ETIAS applies to visa-exempt travellers from 59 countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, who intend to visit the Schengen Area and other participating nations for up to 90 days within any 180 day period.

Beyond the new digital authorisation, travellers must continue to meet strict passport validity requirements. According to official UK Government guidance on GOV.UK, your passport must satisfy 2 key criteria for travel to most EU countries. 1st, it must have been issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country. 2nd, it must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. Failure to meet these requirements may result in being denied boarding or entry at the border. You can check if your document is valid for your specific destination using the official https://www.Gov.UK/foreign-travel-advice foreign travel advice tool.

To secure the authorisation, travellers must complete an online application and pay a processing fee, which is currently expected to be:- €7 for adults. This authorisation must remain valid for the duration of the trip. Transport operators will verify the status of this digital permit before allowing passengers to board flights, cruises, or international trains. At points of departure such as:- Dover, border guards will confirm the existence of a valid ETIAS before vehicles or pedestrians are permitted to board ferries.

Specific exemptions exist for those protected under the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement. British nationals and their family members who hold residence documents issued by an EU member state in a uniform format are generally exempt. These documents act as proof of status, allowing residents to live in their host country and travel across the ETIAS requiring zone without additional authorisation. There are notable exceptions to this exemption regarding documents issued by Ireland and Cyprus. Holders of Withdrawal Agreement residence permits from Ireland must still obtain an ETIAS to visit any of the 30 participating European nations. Similarly, those with documents from Cyprus may enter Cyprus without the authorisation but are required to have a valid ETIAS if they intend to travel to any of the other 29 member countries.

For more details on preparing for travel to Europe, the UK Government provides comprehensive resources including a dedicated tool to check a passport for travel to Europe and specific guidance on the UK ETA scheme for non-UK visitors. Travel experts advise all UK passport holders to check their status and document expiry dates well in advance of the winter holiday season to avoid disruption at the border.

On top of the new requirements, travellers are also reminded they must ensure your British passport remains up to date and valid for international travel. You must monitor both its age and its remaining validity. While a passport is technically valid until its expiry date, international entry rules; particularly for the EU; often require you to renew well before that date arrives.

For travel to most European countries, the UK Government identifies 2 essential requirements that determine if your passport is:- "up to date" for entry:-

  •     The 10 Year Rule - Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country. If your passport was issued more than 10 years ago (even if it has not yet expired), it is not valid for entry to the EU.
  •     The 3 Month Rule - Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the EU.

For destinations outside of Europe, requirements vary significantly. Many countries, including Australia, Thailand, and the UAE, require at least 6 months of validity remaining from the date you arrive. You should always check the foreign travel advice on:- https://www.Gov.UK/foreign-travel-advice for your specific destination.

The Passport Office and travel experts recommend renewing your passport if it has 9 months or less remaining. This buffer accounts for:-

  •     Processing times, which can increase during peak seasons.
  •     Unexpected travel needs.
  •     Entry requirements for countries that demand 6 months of validity.

It is important to note that since 2018, the UK no longer adds:- "unused time" from your old passport to your new 1. Your new passport will be valid for exactly 10 years from the date of issue.

How to Renew

The most efficient way to keep your passport current is through the official renewal service.

  •     Online Application - This is the standard method and costs:- £102.00 for an adult passport. You will need a digital photo that meets specific technical standards and your current passport.
  •     Paper Application - You can use a paper form from the Post Office, which costs:- £115.50.
  •    Check and Send - For an additional fee, the Post Office provides a service to ensure your application and photos are correct before they are sent to the Passport Office, reducing the risk of delays.

If you have changed your name due to marriage or deed poll, your passport is technically out of date for travel until it is updated to match your current legal identity. You must apply for a new passport and provide the original marriage certificate or change of name document as evidence.

Plus, remember you will have to use the new entry systems when visiting European countries. This will also mean you might require extra time for check-in and entry. Check your travel provider for more information.

Before BREXIT British Citizens didn't require applications for Visas, but don't take this for granted.

While the Schengen 90/180 day rule allows for short term visits without a visa, it does not automatically grant the right to work. For those working, remember you must now have valid working visas and your equipment must now be cleared and registered for travel in most cases. This is a major problem for models, actors, photographs, along with other media and art related activities.

Its worth noting that within certain jurisdictions, you might not require a visa or work permit for models and photographers on short term assignments, for example:- France, but only for very restricted tasks and activities.

Its worth adding that since 1 May 2026, a new EU directive (2024/1233) us now streamlining the application processes and improve rights for applicants. Non-EU/EEA nationals, including:- British Citizens, usually require a job offer to obtain an EU work visa, with processes varying by country but often involving a:- €75 to €99 fee. Key pathways include the EU Blue Card for highly skilled workers, which provides a fast track residency, or national work permits for specific countries, typically requiring application at least 2 months in advance. For information about the Blue Card visit this link.

UK citizens carrying work equipment into and out of Europe face distinct regulations depending on whether the items are basic:- "tools of the trade" or commercial cargo. Post-Brexit rules treat the EU as a third country, meaning moving professional kit requires explicit customs consideration to avoid unexpected import duties and VAT. It's now an extremely complicated issue if travelling to Europe, and we strongly advise you check before travelling, as a tourist or as someone working as the consequences of getting it wrong could land you in big trouble.
