Statements issued following the major incident after the Liverpool Parade celebrations

ON Monday, 26 May 2025, shortly after the Liverpool Football Club Premier League Victory Parade had passed, and people started to leave the area, a car is reported to have crashed into pedestrians. A Merseyside Police spokesperson has said:- "We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight's incident on Water Street, in Liverpool City Centre." A Merseyside Police spokesperson added:- "We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight's incident on Water Street."

A Liverpool FC spokesperson said:- "We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident."

Merseyside's Police Commissioner Emily Spurrell as said:- "The footage from tonight's parade is shocking and appalling. My thoughts are with all those affected. A 53 year old, white, British male, from the Liverpool area has now been arrested. My thanks go to Merseyside Police and our emergency service partners who have responded so swiftly. Updates will be provided as soon as possible. In the meantime, I'd urge people to please not speculate any further."

Liverpool City Region Mayor, Steve Rotheram:- "Our hearts go out to all of those affected, especially those who have been injured. Thank you, as ever, to the 1st responders for their professionalism and swift action. This is a difficult day for our City Region, but we stand together."

Liverpool City Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, has issued a statement for Liverpool City Council. Cllr Robinson said:- "Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved in the appalling incident in the city centre. It has cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day. We are working closely with Merseyside Police to support their investigation, and with other relevant organisations to make sure those affected get the appropriate support.”

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said:- "The scenes in Liverpool are appalling; my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.  I am being kept updated on developments and asked that we give the police the space they need to investigate."

Cllr Cashman said:- "1st and foremost, my heart goes out to everyone there that witnessed what happened, and anyone who has been injured and their loved ones. Please be safe in Liverpool City Centre, and please let's let the Police do their job."

A spokesman for the North West Air Ambulance Charity has said that:- “Our crew are working closely with the other agencies involved, including both the Police and North West Ambulance Service. Our priority is the well-being of those involved, and our thoughts are with those affected by the incident."

MP Kim Johnson commented:- "I sincerely hope all those involved are safe and get home to their loved ones soon."
