IN recognition of International Women's Day, Mersey Ferries is hosting a recruitment open day at Pier Head, Liverpool, to recruit 2 new apprentice Deckhands.

With less than 2% of offshore roles filled by people who identify as female, Mersey Ferries sets sail the winds of change and encourages anyone who has considered a career on the water to stop for a warm drink and a chat between:- 10am and 2pm on:- Saturday, 15 March 2025 at Pier Head.

The 5-year long apprenticeships on offer give recruits an opportunity to join the world-famous Mersey Ferries, starting as Deckhands and learning the ropes, before training to become Captain, and securing a guaranteed job at the end.

Councillor Steve Foulkes, Chair of the Transport Committee, said:- “The apprenticeships available at Mersey Ferries are life changing, and available to all ages;– apprenticeships aren’t just for young people. I’ve worked with many apprentices myself; I know the impact of good quality training and I urge anyone, of any age, to apply if it’s something they dream of achieving. For 800 years, the Mersey Ferries has seen a male Captain at the helm, it would be incredible if we could make this change happen and recruit our first female Captain.”

Attendees will be invited to travel on an exclusive tour of the Mersey Ferry before the event and witness 1st-hand what a career on the Mersey is like. Captains, Engineers and 1st Mates will be on hand to answer questions and show prospective recruits what a day aboard the iconic ferry entails.

The free event is open to all. No need to register, visitors can simply show up and learn more about what an offshore career involves and how to secure an apprenticeship to be the 1st female Captain of the Mersey Ferries.
