No reports of dead fish or affected wildlife after Mersey oil spill
A minor oil spill has occurred in the River Mersey which has been reported to the Environment Agency (EA) which is now investigating the incident.
It is reported that the spill was from EET Fuel's Stanlow Oil Refinery on the Wirral. It is thought to have now traveled over 12 miles into the mouth of the River Mersey since the incident was reported on:- 12 September 2024. The spill has resulted in the closure of Leasowe cockle beds being closed as EA do checks to see if they have been contaminated by the oil. We are told that EET Fuels who run the Refinery took 'immediate' action and had alerted the EA immediately. In a press statement by EET Fuels they said that they have:- "identified the source and took immediate action to rectify it." They also stated:- "We activated the well-established processes we have in place to deal with this type of incident. We have also undertaken inspections to identify potential impacts on the waterways." Adding:- "We informed the Environment Agency, who attended the site and we will continue to cooperate fully with them." An Environment Agency spokesperson has told the media that:- “We are currently investigating an incident of oil pollution in the River Mersey that occurred on the:- 12 September 2024. We immediately attended and took swift action to identify the source and work with the relevant company to reduce the impact on the environment. Thankfully, we received no reports of dead fish or affected wildlife. We take pollution seriously and we will take appropriate enforcement action as required. We encourage anyone who witnesses pollution to report it to our incident line 24/7, on:- 0800 807060 so that we can investigate.” COMMENTS (0)
