OLLY'S Future suicide prevention charity is inviting all Sefton GP practice staff; both clinical and non-clinical;-  to attend a 90 minute online suicide prevention training course for FREE to help them better support children and young people.

The training is part of a primary care initiative called  Practise Hope which  aims to increase knowledge, skills and awareness around self harm and suicide in young people, aged between:- 10 to 25 years old.

Practise Hope has already  been delivered widely across Kent, Surrey and Sussex, South West London and now in Sefton with the funding from the Zero Suicide Alliance.

Olly's Future was established by Ann Feloy after losing her son Oliver (Olly) to suicide at the age of just 22. Ann helped devise the initiative through her lived experience, working with Health Education England.  She and her team have been fighting to combat suicide;  the largest cause of death in the UK for men under the age of 45.

Ann said:- “Talking about suicide, without fear or judgement, is the best form of prevention we have. We know that primary care health professionals can play a major part in supporting young people with thoughts of suicide and self harm, helping to save lives.”

The Pracise Hope training involves understanding the views of young people when they are seeking help, discusses risk assessments and confidentiality, and care planning around self-harm and suicide. It also includes:-

●        Common themes around suicide in young people.

●        National data around deaths by suicide.

●        Practise Hope general findings (area wide data)

Doctors, Nurses and non-clinical staff at practices said the training helped them ….

“… to better observe/listen for signs and to encourage young people to open up about their concerns”

“ ... to have an appreciation of what a young person may be expecting from their GP.  I think I always feel like they come to us because they want us to fix it, which can be very hard to do. The training illustrated that they often just want someone to listen and empathise with them ...”

“... to learn about the high rates of death by suicide especially in younger age groups, the importance of language, the need to have suitable numbers to hand when people call and also the importance of f2f
appointments …”

The sessions are all on a Wednesday and  delivered on Zoom by a trainer who is themselves a clinician. The sessions are as follows:-

Clinical Staff, will take place on:- 1pm to 2pm, on:- 3 May,  7 June, 14 June 2023.

Non Clinical Staff, will take place on:- 1pm to 2:30pm, on:- 26 April, 10 May, 24 May 2023
