A community-led project in Maghull that was helped through Sefton Council’s crowdfunding programme, Sefton Crowd, has now gained national recognition.

Friends of Maghull and District (FOMD) were announced as winners of the Royal Horticultural Society and BBC One Show’s “Growing Together” competition, celebrating the UK’s most inspiring community gardening initiatives.

The winning project, Rowlands Dell was showcased live on BBC’s The One Show. Judges were moved by the transformation of a neglected green space near Maghull’s NHS Medical Centre into a vibrant eco-haven that promotes biodiversity and community wellbeing.

Led by Frank Sharp, the project was made possible through a successful Sefton Crowd campaign, supported by Sefton Council’s Community Transition Fund and a significant NHS social value grant.

Volunteers removed over 25 tons of debris, installed accessible pathways, and created nature zones filled with native plants and wildlife-friendly features.

Frank Sharp said:- “This award is a testament to the power of community spirit and the incredible dedication of our volunteers, so we’re thrilled that the RHS and BBC have recognised our efforts. The project is a brimming melting pot of kindness which has galvanised and inspired the community, imbuing them with a sense of purpose, pride and positivity while preserving and enhancing this precious, cherished green space.”

Frank also shared a heartfelt message of thanks on the Maghull community page, giving special recognition to Sefton Council and the Sefton Crowd platform for helping bring the vision to life.

Cllr Liz Dowd, Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnership Engagement added:- “The transformation of Rowlands Dell is a shining example of what can be achieved when communities come together with passion and purpose. We’re incredibly proud of Friends of Maghull and District and delighted that their hard work has been recognised nationally. This project not only enhances our local environment but also strengthens the wellbeing and connection of our communities.”

The Spring 2025 round of Sefton Crowd saw 2 local projects reach their funding targets. Rowlands Dell, now a national award-winner and Lucilla Theatre a registered charity, who are upgrading outdated stage lighting with eco-friendly LED lamps.

If you are inspired by these projects, you can start your own community-led initiative through Sefton Crowd, Sefton Council’s crowdfunding programme in partnership with Spacehive.

The Autumn 2025 round is now open, offering funding and support to help bring local ideas to life. Each project can apply for up to £5,000 from Sefton Council’s Community Transition Fund. Sefton Crowd can support projects that enhance neighbourhoods, strengthen community connections, increase skills and confidence and create positive social or environmental change.
