Pope Francis has died aged 88
TODAY, Roman Catholics in the United Kingdom and around the world are in mourn after the news broke that Pope Francis has died.
At 9:45 am, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the death of Pope Francis from the Casa Santa Marta with these words:- "Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 am this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God." Metropolitan Cathedral has opened a book of condolence is available at the Cathedral for anyone who wishes to leave a message or prayer. Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral said:- "Join us for Mass for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis on:- Tuesday, 22 April 2025, at:- 7.00 pm, at the Metropolitan Cathedral. All are welcome as we come together in prayer." The Archdiocese of Liverpool has said:- "We stand with our Catholic brothers and sisters, giving thanks for the life of Pope Francis and pray for the repose of his soul. May he rest in the peace of the risen Lord." King Charles III statement on the passing of Pope Francis:- "Our heavy hearts have been somewhat eased, however, to know that His Holiness was able to share an Easter Greeting with the Church and the world he served with such devotion throughout his life and ministry." Prime Minister, Keir Starmer has said:- "Deeply saddened to hear of the death of His Holiness Pope Francis. His tireless efforts to promote a world that is fairer for all will leave a lasting legacy. On behalf of the people of the United Kingdom, I share my sincerest condolences to the whole Catholic Church."
