DID you know that we will be getting a host of new driving laws coming into effect this year (2024) from new 20 mph speed limits in England to pavement parking bans?

Whilst the rules of the road and the Highway Code change frequently, the firm warned that motorists who are not aware of alterations could face significantly hefty fines.

changes so far are like the 20 mph zones that are starting to appear in more areas in England. The Welsh and Scottish Governments have already put 20 mph zones across all residential areas.  Wirral Council has approved the 20 mph limit on a further 1,000 roads. The council has already approved the limit within 1,700 areas.

You will see more restricted access for vehicles at drop off and pick up times around Schools in England. Both Southport's   Greenbank High School and Birkdale High School in Sefton hit national headlines when the plot initiative started back in July 2023, as part of Liverpool City Region's 'School Streets.'

The DVSA has yet to confirm what changes will be made to the eyesight exam, but you should keep an eye on this...

It’s now illegal to park on the pavement in Scotland. Drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) could face more stringent safety rules when driving in London from October 2024.

Richard Evans, head of technical services at webuyanycar, comments:- “As we welcome in the new year, it’s important that drivers stay up to date with the rules and laws on the roads. Our research shows that three in five (61%) motorists don’t believe that all drivers are aware of new driving rules and laws. When driving on UK roads, it is important for drivers to understand the Highway Code to make sure they aren’t breaking the law, and to ensure the safety of other road users. Over the last few years, there have been some changes to the law with Scotland introducing a pavement parking ban and many areas adding 20mph zones or extending their ultra low emission zones. Faced with the potential of fines or penalties for not obeying these rules, it’s even more important that drivers remind themselves of the rules. It’s important to stay mindful of what is going on when driving around for the safety of everyone on the road and to avoid any unnecessary fines. Our guide to UK road signs covers some of the most commonly encountered signs and their meanings, so drivers know what to be looking out for on the roads.”

With the new year underway, drivers must stay aware of the rules of the road and refresh themselves on all the laws.
