2 dead after road floods in Liverpool
2 people have been killed in a black Mercedes car that had been stuck in deep floodwater. The incident happened at around 9pm, within the Moseley Hill area of Liverpool, following a thunderstorm.
Merseyside Police have confirmed that the black Mercedes Class 180 drove into a flooded area, beneath a bridge, on Queens Drive, between:- North Mossley Hill Road and Dovedale Road, on the A5053. The 2 casualties were then trapped in their car in the rising flood water. We are told that passers-by tried to help the male and female who had been trapped inside. Emergency workers arrived on location shortly after and the 2 casualties were then taken to a local hospital but were pronounced dead. Merseyside Police Detective Chief Inspector Mike Dalton said:- “Our thoughts go out to the family of the man and woman who sadly lost their lives in this tragic incident, despite the best efforts of passing members of the public, our officers and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services at the scene. We are at the early stages of the investigation to establish the circumstances of this tragic incident. We are continuing to appeal to anyone who was on Queens Drive, between:- North Mossley Hill Road and Dovedale Road, at around 9.20pm, on Saturday, 26 August 2023, and saw the accident, or who stopped to try to help or anyone who had any dashcam footage from their car to come forward as soon as possible. Similarly, if you live in the area and have any doorbell or CCTV footage from last night please share this with us.” The next of kin of the man and woman have now been informed and formal identification has been made. A file has been passed to the Coroner who has asked Merseyside Police to further investigate the incident. We are told that this location where the road dips beneath a bridge has been an issue for a while now, whenever there is torrential rain. It has also been reported that several vehicles have been stuck in flood water in the last few months, in this location. With global climate change, we should expect more localized flooding and expect to have to use alternative routes for our journeys following heavy rain. Please remember to avoid driving through flooded roads. Both Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service have since reminded people that it is incredibly dangerous to drive into flooded areas and that motorists should use alternative routes, should they find a road is flooded. Merseyside Water Rescue (MWR) added:- "Always avoid driving through flooded roads, they can harbour hidden dangers. Even 30cm of water can cause you to lose traction and leave you stranded."
