REPORTING restrictions, which prevented the suspected assailant, accused of murdering 3 girls in Monday's attack in Southport, have been lifted.

17 year old Axel Rudakubana would normally have been granted anonymity due to his age. but Judge Andrew Menary KC made this unusual move to name him 6 days ahead of his 18th birthday, partly in an attempt to prevent further misinformation about him from spreading online.

Judge Andrew Menary KC told the court his decision to reveal identity saying:- "Whilst I accept it is exceptional given his age, principally because he is 18 in 6 days' time, I do not make an order under Section 45 continuing to prevent the full reporting has the disadvantage of allowing others to spread misinformation, in a vacuum."

Normally, for legal reasons, the details of a person under 18 cannot be revealed to the public; such as their name, address, and place of education. This is why we, the media, have not published information sooner. This case highlights the issues around legislation and the responsibility of both the media and the authorities to help prevent fake news from being pushed out by social media channels and in other ways.

A plea and trial preparation hearing has been set for:- 25 October 2024, at:- Liverpool Crown Court, with Rudakubana being remanded in youth custody. At Liverpool Magistrates Court today (Thursday, 1 August 2024) Rudakubana was told he faces 3 murder charges, 10 attempted murder charges, and a charge of possession of a bladed article.

This is what we know so far about Axel Rudakubana. We are told that he moved to the village of Banks, in Lancashire, near Southport, Merseyside, in 2013. He is charged with 3 counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder in connection to an incident at a Taylor Swift themed holiday club, in Southport. We are also told he has a autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. He also is reported to have been:- ""nwilling to leave the house and communicate with family for a period of time."

Please remember that misinformation is still being posted on social media and this is still an active investigation.
