Top Jazz Musicians to host Free Workshops in Liverpool

A series of FREE music workshops from multi-award winning artists is taking place in Liverpool on:- Saturday, 22 February 2025 at Liverpool Hope University’s Creative Campus. Open to musicians of any age and standard, there will be engaging lessons in brass, Indian Classical, polyrhythm and improv, songwriting and composing.

A fantastic opportunity for musicians of any genre, the free workshops are being facilitated by Liverpool Hope University’s Liverpool International Jazz Festival. Taking place between:- Thursday, 20 February and Sunday, 23 February 2025, the festival is a 4 day extravaganza with a wide range of shows and activities. Thanks to Arts Council funding, here are the free music workshops available….


Saturday, 22 February, 10am, Cornerstone Building:- Playing Music Together with Florian Arbenz

Groove, solos, and interplay for all instruments! Top Swiss drummer Florian Arbenz is the twin brother of pianist Michael Arbenz. He has toured, recorded and performed with artists including Kirk Lightsey, Glenn Ferris, Dave Liebman, Andy Sheppard, Heinz Holliger and many others.


Saturday, 22 February, 10.30am, Cornerstone Building:- Brass Workshop with Percy Pursglove

Focus on breathing, flexibility, and range for brass players! Percy Pursglove is a composer, multi instrumentalist and award winning improviser whose work spans a broad range of genres from avant garde: new-destructionism and a multitude of indeterminate improvisational settings to choral composition and pop collaborations. Percy has worked with the likes of Elbow, Jamie Cullum and Amy Winehouse.


Saturday, 22 February, 11am, Capstone Theatre:- Demystifying Indian Classical Music with Rekesh Chauhan

Learn about ragas, talas, and rhythm cycles! Rekesh Chauhan BEM is a British Indian pianist and music composer who combines eastern and western musical styles. He has performed at both the Royal Albert Hall and the Birmingham Symphony Hall and has collaborated with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Talvin Singh and Soumik Datta. A multi-award winning musician, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to music, charity and mental health.


Saturday, 22 February, 11.30am, Capstone Theatre:- Performing Indian Classical Music with Rekesh Chauhan & Kousic Sen

Hands-on raga performance and improvisation. Once again join the legendary Rekesh Chauhan — this time alongside Kousic Sen. As a performer, Kousic Sen is a tabla player whose intense and energetic performances add a new dimension to the traditional concert experience. His rhythmic mastery has become known around the globe through his performances with leading musicians in many of the world’s most famous venues.


Saturday, 22 February, 11am, Cornerstone Building:- Polyrhythm and Improvisation with Ivo Neame

Explore rhythmic techniques and polyrhythms in jazz! Ivo Neame is an internationally renowned pianist, composer, and bandleader who has established himself as one of the most innovative and dynamic figures in the contemporary jazz scene. He regularly collaborates with ensembles as diverse as the Frankfurt Radio Big Band and the London Sinfonietta and best known for his work with the award-winning bands Phronesis and Marius Neset Quintet.


Saturday, 22 February, 11.30am, Capstone Theatre:- Songwriting with Immy Churchill

Tips on lyrics, melody, and chords! Immy Churchill is recognised as a “rising star” on the jazz scene and has made a big name for herself on the London scene, playing at venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and Pizza Express and The Royal Albert Hall.


Saturday, 22 February, 2pm, Cornerstone Building:- Composition with Christy Doran

Learn to create compositions with space for improvisation! Christy Doran became internationally known thanks to his collaboration in the “electric jazz/free music” group OM. He has been awarded many prizes, such as the Art Prize of the City of Lucerne in 2003. His name was included in the series “European Jazz Legends” by the renowned magazine “Jazz Thing” (Berlin) in 2017. In 2020 he received the Swiss Music Prize.

The free workshops are available to musicians of all ages and standards and a unique opportunity to learn from some of the best artists in their field. The free workshops are taking place at Liverpool Hope University’s Creative Campus as part of Liverpool International Jazz Festival and are being funded by the Arts Council.
