LIVERPOOL City Council is urging drivers to take extra precautions this winter as adverse weather conditions can significantly increase the risk of road traffic collisions.

According to RoSPA, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, in 2023, 21 people were killed, 382 were seriously injured, and 1,307 were slightly injured in reported road traffic collisions on Great Britain’s roads when there was rain, snow, sleet, or fog.

Driving in winter presents unique challenges, including reduced visibility and increased stopping distances. The Road Safety Team advises drivers to:-

Prepare your vehicle:-
  • Ensure your vehicle has been properly maintained and serviced.
  • Check that your tyres have sufficient tread depth, including the spare, and that each tyre has the correct tyre pressure for the vehicle and its intended use.
  • Verify that your cooling system contains the correct amount of antifreeze/engine coolant.
  • Test your wipers and washers to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  • Fill your washer bottles with a suitable winter additive to prevent freezing. Ensure you have enough to complete your journey.
  • Carry a screen scraper and de-icer.
  • Check your battery's condition and ensure it is fully charged.
  • Check condition and operation of all the vehicle’s external and internal lights.

Plan your journey:-
  • Ask yourself if your journey is essential.
  • Check weather forecasts and road conditions before you depart.
  • Ensure you have a full tank of fuel, or if you have an Electric Vehicle ensure that the vehicle has sufficient charge for your journey.
  • If you intend a lengthy journey, ensure that you know where you can refuel/recharge your vehicle if required.
  • On longer journeys, inform someone of your destination and expected arrival time, and consider packing warm clothing, hot drinks, food, and any necessary emergency supplies
  • Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged for the journey in the event that you need to contact someone.

Drive cautiously:-
  • Reduce your speed in snowy and icy conditions.
  • Drive in the highest gear possible to maintain control.
  • Avoid harsh braking and acceleration.
  • Maintain a safe stopping distance.
  • Use dipped headlights in poor visibility and snow.
  • Use rear fog lights only when necessary and switch them off when conditions improve.
  • Be aware of other road users, especially vulnerable road-users like cyclists, pedestrians, and children.

If you encounter difficulties:-
  • Stay with your vehicle if possible until help arrives.
  • If you must leave your vehicle, make yourself visible to other road users.
  • If you abandon your vehicle, notify the local police and park in a location that does not obstruct winter maintenance vehicles, or other road-users.
  • If you breakdown on the motorway, ensure your vehicle is safely out of the way on the hard shoulder or within an emergency refuge space. Exit the vehicle and find appropriate shelter from the elements whilst you wait for assistance.
