SEFTON Council's Cabinet is set to consider 2 reports that will have a hugely positive impact on major projects in Southport.

Repair and refurbishment works to Southport Pier are expected to get underway in early 2026, Sefton Council has announced today.

Once they start the works will take approximately 14 months to complete.

The Local Authority’s Cabinet will consider a report due to be published on:- Thursday, 6 November 2025, which outlines plans to commence work as soon as possible on the iconic Southport Pier.

A full restoration of the unsafe structure, which has sadly been closed since December 2022 for health and safety reasons, will now take place thanks to a £20 million investment from the UK Government’s Growth Mission Fund.

The funding announcement, confirmed last month, follows extensive planning, structural assessments and public safety measures undertaken by Sefton Council since it was forced to temporarily close the pier to keep people safe.

The Grade II listed structure, the 2nd longest in Britain, stretches 3600 feet and encompasses breathtaking views of the Town’s Marine Lake, Promenade and beach.

It is estimated to contribute over £15 million annually to the local economy through tourism and hospitality.

Thanks to Government funding, the restoration will go far beyond the original decking replacement plans approved 3 years ago.

Following detailed surveys, the scope now includes:-

  • Full replacement of decking boards and timber joists.
  • Extensive steelwork repairs and replacements due to corrosion.
  • Installation of new gates and CCTV.
  • Implementation of a new long-term maintenance regime.

The appointment will see:- Lady Dalglish MBE sit alongside the families of:- Alice Aguiar, Bebe King and Elsie Dot Stancombe and funders as the ambitious legacy project progresses in the heart of Southport Town Centre.

This follows the conclusion of the 1st phase of a dedicated engagement and consultation exercise to seek the views of residents, businesses and visitors on the future look and offer provided by the revamped Gardens.

The historic space will undergo its most significant regeneration ever, creating a family-friendly, child.orientated, and safe open-air performance and gathering space as a lasting:- ‘thank you’ to the people of the Town.

Alice, Bebe and Elsie, whose shared love of dance, music and the arts have inspired the vision, which will lead to the creation of an inclusive community focussed events space.

Feedback from the 1st stage of the consultation showed support for the regeneration project, with consultee views focussed on the recurring themes of water features, preservation of heritage and vehicle access.

Responses from this engagement stage will now be incorporated alongside feedback from families and schools to help shape a formal design and project plan.
