Statement from Southport MP Patrick Hurley
SOUTHPORT'S MP Patrick Hurley issued the following press statement on 4 August 2024:- "Southport is in mourning. Our community has been subject to the worst atrocity here in living memory. The town is reeling, our emotions heightened. At this time, I want to strongly condemn the recent acts of violence and vandalism across the country, which their instigators and defenders have linked to the violent attack on our children on Monday. These despicable actions seek to intimidate and threaten ordinary communities and innocent people. Just this week, a local mosque in Southport was targeted, a Citizen’s Advice Bureau in Sunderland was burned down, and a newly-renovated library in Liverpool was also destroyed. These are not the legitimate targets of grievance; these are the places where people go to help each other in tough times. Nothing better exemplifies the dangers here than seeing a library full of books being burned down. My thoughts continue to be with the families who have lost their young daughters, with those injured, and with those who knew the girls killed. I cannot begin to fathom the pain they must be experiencing. As a community we will pull together to support them through this immense loss, and remember the three innocent lives taken away too soon. Also, those that are still healing; Monday’s atrocity will leave more than just physical marks, and people will need the support of their community. We will still be here when the eyes of the world move on. I can't help but think of the heroes who stepped in to protect and save children. Our thanks extends to them, as well as the first responders and emergency services who continue to protect our own. Southport is in mourning."
