PUPILS at Linaker Primary School in Southport had a week to remember recently as a clutch of ducklings hatched right before their eyes in the middle of their Reception classroom.
As part of their learning about life cycles, children in Reception at Linaker, which is part of the Endeavour Learning Trust, have been watching over a clutch of eggs, waiting for the moment they would hatch.
When the eggs began to wobble and crack, the whole school was gripped. The ducklings have taken up residence in the Reception class, giving children the chance to observe every stage of the process at close quarters, from the 1st crack in the shell to the ducklings growing stronger and more curious each day.
Staff have been delighted by the response from pupils, who have shown real care and responsibility towards their new arrivals, asking thoughtful questions and demonstrating what the school describes as "gentle hands and nurturing instincts".
The new arrivals even made a guest appearance at the school's Baby and Toddler Playgroup, delighting a whole new audience in the process.
Mark Cunniffe, headteacher at Linaker Primary School, said:- "It was a truly special moment. Seeing the children's faces as those eggs started to crack is something we will all remember for a long time. What has been particularly lovely is watching how much responsibility and care the children have shown. They have learned so much, not just about life cycles, but about kindness, patience and looking after others. That is exactly the kind of learning that stays with you."
