MERSEY Care has launched a new Online Autism Passport, designed in collaboration with autistic people and local support groups, to strengthen personalised care, improve communication, and ensure autistic people receive more consistent support across a range of services.
The digital passport allows autistic people to clearly communicate their needs, preferences, and what helps when they may be distressed - helping professionals across health, social care, and emergency services respond in a way that is respectful, informed, and tailored.
Sonia Anderson, Clinical Lead for Autism at Mersey Care, said:- “The passport gives autistic people a stronger voice in situations where they may struggle to be heard. It’s a simple online tool that can have a powerful impact.”
By making it easier for autistic people and their families to have trusted information online and by offering a simpler, more coordinated way to share important details with local teams, the Online Autism Passport supports the NHS Long Term Plan’s ambition to expand digital first options and deliver more personalised care.
The passport can be completed, updated, and stored on personal devices, making sure individuals always have accurate, up to date information available when meeting new professionals or accessing different services. Paper copies remain available for those who prefer them.
Key features include:-
- Personal and medical information, including emergency contacts and health conditions
- Communication preferences, including whether an advocate is needed
- Sensory needs, triggers, and calming strategies
- Guidance for police and emergency service staff to support safe and appropriate interactions
- Support needs during distress
- Information about everyday challenges, such as difficulties with noise, metaphors, or multitasking.
Autistic individuals can choose who to share their passport with - including doctors, nurses, support workers, mental health teams, police, or anyone else involved in their care.
The Online Autism Passport is now available to download, complete, and save via Mersey Care’s Autism Spectrum Condition Services webpage.
