Controversial 20mph speed limits changes on Merseyside
AFTER Wales have rescinded many of the 20mph speed limit changes they have recently introduced nationally, locals on Merseyside are asking why Wirral Council is pushing to further roll out the speed limit across large parts of the Borough.
The idea behind the controversial scheme has faced large opposition and recently signs have been defaced by vandals. Some individuals are asking if this will increase emission rates within these areas, possibly resulting in higher respiratory-related health issues, plus raising other concerns. The Council says it believes that the new 20mph limits have the potential to save lives across the extra 20 areas they plan to introduce the limits. But it isn't just Wirral who are still looking at this, as other Councils within Merseyside are still looking at pushing ahead with similar ideas. Many are saying blanket use of the 20mph limit in Wales has highlighted the problems and costs of introducing a consistent policy. Many motorists also say the use of 20mph zones often results in bigger problems within areas that haven't had any safety issues before. Others say that it might be more appropriate to have signs in targeted areas that change the speed limits at set times that are appropriate for that area and not just leave it at 20mph all the time.
There seems to be generally universal support for 20mph being targeted in areas where there are schools, built up areas like housing estates, and outside hospitals, but the costs and on what roads they should be introduced on is always going to be a problem.
