MERSEYRAIL staff are hosting a series of safety roadshows this week as the rail industry across the whole of the UK puts a spotlight on accidents and incidents on the railway. 'Rail Safety Week' is an industrywide initiative focusing on rail safety for all. The aim is to put rail safety at the forefront of peoples' minds. During the week Merseyrail is hosting a range of activities that will educate members of the public on how to keep safe around the railway.

A safety roadshow was hosted by Merseyrail at Maghull station on:- Tuesday, 25 June 2024. Staff from the train operating company were joined by representatives from:- British Transport Police and Network Rail, to engage with school children and other customers traveling in and out of Maghull station. A 2nd roadshow was also held at Bebington Station on:- Wednesday, 26 June 2024.

Suzanne Grant, Chief Commercial Office and Deputy Managing Director of Merseyrail, said:- "Keeping our customers safe during their journeys is a priority for us. So having time dedicated to informing and educating people about railway safety is really important."

Rail Safety Week was the brainchild of Alan Tarrant. Over 140 organisations took in 2023, bringing rail safety to the forefront of people’s minds in the workplace, the industry, communities, and Schools, and the hope is that in 2024 it would be even bigger.

Suzanne added:- "Merseyrail places a lot of focus on our customer service, station staff are on hand at many of our stations to help people get to the platforms and onto the trains safely. We're proud of the safety record we have, but we're not complacent. Trains and stations can be dangerous places if people don’' follow the instructions. The work we will do this week will help ensure that everyone is safer when using our network."

Rail Safety Week also presents a fantastic opportunity to provide some fun activities for younger customers and to educate school age children about the importance of safety on and around the railway. The official Rail Safety Week website has a colouring competition for younger children and a rail-themed crossword for those a little older. Both can be found on the Rail Safety Week website and are open to children across the UK.

If entering the competition, please ensure you have posted your entry to Rail Forum to arrive by:- Monday, 29 July 2024.  Judging will take place and winners will be announced by the end of August 2024. Full information can be found on the Rail Safety Week website.
