Theatre Review of the Festive Adult Production by City Theatre - “The Scouse Genie.”
RUNNING at Liverpool’s Hope Street Theatre, until 2 December 2023, is Liverpool’s City Theatre’s latest production, called:- "The Scouse Genie.” Based loosely on the characters and story Aladdin, this adult panto gives new life to the traditional story.
This reboot version will be something you've never seen before and is based in Liverpool, England. If you are a TV or film censer, this would hit the 15-certificate mark. The plot centers on 5 main characters, and the main cast members are all extremely funny with the delivery of the script, which is adult but doesn’t push the boundaries too far. Do not expect the traditional “it's behind you” but well be told, anyone who doesn’t turn the mobile off, as on the 1st night, when we watched the show, a phone went off and the cast quickly made it into a joke for the rest of the night. This is something you expect from panto, and it is refreshing to see audience interaction with the cast, and good ab lib work by the cast members... At times the storyline can be quite awkward, as the play lacks many props and backgrounds, that you expect from bigger budget performances. This means a few times cast members are miming actions, but that is very nitpicky. Also, singing, as with many of Barry Levy's productions, tends to let the side down at times. But overall this is a very well-polished and thought-out performance with good use of the stage and the environment, which also included the cast going into the audience… The story is a simple idea, that is not overly complicated, but well thought out and easy to follow. It starts with an encounter and ends on a high. Just what you require from a panto. It is packed full of jokes, but not too many that spoil the show, and many of the jokes form part of the main storyline, so pay attention! You have been warned... The show is directed by one of the main cast members, Shannon Griffiths, playing Haribo. Normally this can be a recipe for disaster, but she and the cast perform extremely well together and if you didn’t read the extremely professional-looking program, you might not know she is the director as well as one of the main characters. We are keeping this post short, as we will be doing a bigger review, with lots of photos, within our next weekly edition of Southport Reporter. We are told Friday Night has sold out, but the last night, to be held on:- Saturday, 2 December 2023, still has a few tickets to sell… But they are going fast, so do not delay… We give this stage show a fantastic:- 5 out of 5 popcorn kernels! Well done to all the cast and crew... 5 out of 5 Popcorn Kernels It is worth adding, that the next performance by City Theatre will be the 2nd part of the acclaimed hit stage play:- Warnock... Spoiler, we are currently turning into a TV production... This new stage show, called:- Blackridge, is a very powerful story, just like Warnock. It will have its premier in March 2024, at the Hope Street Theatre, and is already selling tickets. These plays are very serious productions that are in development and written by Barry Levy, who is also the Producer.
