MERSEYRAIL has activated its cold weather plans, ahead of an expected drop in temperatures overnight going into:- Tuesday, 16 January 2024, to help ensure services continue to operate safely.

Temperatures are expected to fall to -3C overnight with the metal rails set to be even colder. The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning across the North West of England, meaning preventative measures have been activated to deal with the potential for ice on the tracks tomorrow morning.

First services of the day on each line will therefore run without passengers, enabling the rail conditions to be checked before passenger services can commence normally. Full details of the trains affected are available on the Merseyrail website.

Passengers should check for the latest travel advice before starting their journey by using the Merseyrail app, which can be downloaded from the Merseyrail website.

Suzanne Grant, Commercial Director at Merseyrail, said:- "We are sorry for the disruption this cold weather will cause to our customers intending to travel on the first services tomorrow morning. We do everything possible to avoid canceling services, but when the predicted weather conditions require it, we have to take appropriate steps to make sure the network can continue to operate safely. Merseyrail and Network Rail teams will be out during the night, working hard to reduce the impact the forecasted weather has on the network. This will include using a de-icing train, which distributes snow and ice treatment on the conductor rails to prevent ice from forming. Passengers should check for the latest updates before heading to the station in the morning."
