An example of what the Emergency Alert might look like on your mobile device.
ON Sunday, 23 April 2023, there will be a national test of the new:- "UK Emergency Alerts Service."

This service new that will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby, on mobile devices, even if it’s set on silent! When activated your mobile phone or tablet may:-
  • Make a loud siren like sound, even if it’s set on silent!

  • Vibrate!

  • Read out the alert!

The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds.

An alert will include a phone number or a link to the GOV.UK website for more information.

The system works in a similar way as the Tornado Alert and other systems work within the US. The system will not track you but will work off proximity to mobile masts. So if a mast is in the danger zone and you are connected to it, you’ll get alerts based on your current location. Also, to get messages on this new system, you do not need to turn on location services to receive alerts.

If you do not have a compatible device, you’ll still be informed about an emergency. The emergency services have other ways to warn you when there is a threat to life. Emergency alerts will also not replace updates on:- local news, radio, television, or social media.

If you have a vision or hearing impairment, audio and vibration attention signals will let you know you have an emergency alert. Plus, Emergency alerts may also be sent in Welsh, if in Wales, as well as in English!

If you do not have a compatible device, you’ll still be informed about an emergency. The emergency services have other ways to warn you when there is a threat to life, such as on:- TV, Radio, and Online, via services like ourselves.

It will still be illegal to respond to an alert, as it is illegal to:- "use a hand held device while driving or riding." So, should you get an alert, driving or riding, find somewhere safe and legal to stop before reading the message. Do not attempt to pick up the mobile phone and deal with the message, until you have stopped.

The test alert on  Sunday, 23 April 2023, will be sent out thought:- England, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The Alert will say:-"This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a new UK government service that will warn you if there’s a life threatening emergency nearby. In an actual emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe.Visit gov.uk/alerts for more information. This is a test. You do not need to take any action."

Very interesting idea. I have read that the system is intended for use in major crises, like flooding incidents, or if we have a terrorist attack, but didn't we have this in place already? Was this not used successfully over the UK lockdowns?
