Innovative Plumbing Student Project Adapts to New Challenge in Hydrogen IntegrationÂ
HUGH Baird College has partnered with the UK's largest gas distributor, Cadent Gas, to deliver an innovative project with the College's Plumbing students.
The project centered around the real world challenge of integrating hydrogen fuel into the energy mix. The students were presented with a complex scenario in a residential cul-de-sac where most homeowners (15 out of 20) were ready to switch to hydrogen, while a minority preferred to stay with traditional gas. Adding to the complexity, the area was serviced by a single pipeline, making the integration process a true test of their skills. Cadent Gas is the UK's largest gas distribution network, delivering gas to 11 million homes and businesses. Barry Statham, Technical Officer of Future Energy and Investment at Cadent Gas, said:- "The students at Hugh Baird College delivered a fantastic project with outstanding results. Their presentations were excellent, going above the ordinary by citing current technology such as Palladium filtration. The project, filled with challenges and rewards, confirmed their excitement for unusual but relevant approaches to the future of gas." Adrian Bennett, Plumbing Lecturer at Hugh Baird College, said:- "The students gained a unique experience completing this employer-led project with Cadent Gas and we are incredibly proud of them. The students developed unique and well-researched solutions throughout the project and professionally presented their findings." The team at Cadent Gas intends to create a new project brief for students in the coming academic year.
