Chester Storyhouse Celebrates 2025 UK Theatre Awards Nominations
THE acclaimed Chester cultural centre is shortlisted for Excellence in Inclusivity in the 2025 awards, with the winners set to be revealed at a special evening at the spectacular 8 Northumberland Avenue in London on 12 October.
Meanwhile, actors Rakesh Boury and Rebecca McKinnis have been nominated for Best Performance in a Musical for their roles in David Baddiel’s The Parent Agency musical, a co-production between Scenario Two and Storyhouse, which received its world premiere at the Hunter Street theatre in February. Since 1991, UK Theatre’s annual UK Theatre Awards have celebrated the creative excellence and outstanding work seen on and off stage in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Among the other accolades being contested next month are the coveted UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre – which Storyhouse won in 2019, while the Birmingham Royal Ballet's Director Carlos Acosta CBE will receive the award for Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre. Storyhouse Chief Executive Annabel Turpin said: "We’re absolutely thrilled that Storyhouse has been nominated in this year’s UK Theatre Awards, with recognition for our excellence in inclusivity. We believe arts and culture should be accessible to all, whether this be as audiences, participants or creators. As a multi-use cultural space, with a varied year round programme of in-house and outreach work, we engage people in multiple ways, often leading them to discover new opportunities to take part in culture, creativity and, importantly, community. It’s also wonderful to see Rakesh Bourry and Rebecca McKinnis included in the UK Theatre Awards nominations for their brilliant performances in The Parent Agency which we premiered here in Chester earlier this year. The UK Theatre Awards are a very important industry acknowledgement of the fantastic and inventive work going on in theatres and companies the length and breadth of the country, and we’re proud to be in such great company. We’re really looking forward to joining our colleagues at the awards ceremony in London next month.” Previously, Storyhouse has won the Excellence in Arts Education title in 2022 for its wide ranging programme with and for young people. It has also received several other UK Theatre Awards nominations since it opened in 2017, including Best Show for Children and Young People for The Secret Seven and Best Design for Jess Curtis’ set for A Little Night Music, both in 2018, and Best Musical Production for Tim Firth’s Now is Good (2022).
