THE UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued an urgent health warning to parents and caregivers concerning:- "Nutrition Ignition Kids Magnesium Glycinate Gummies" after routine testing discovered an undeclared prescription only medication within the product.

The popular children's supplement, marketed to support:- "calm, focus, and digestion" in children aged 4 and above, was found to contain melatonin, a hormone commonly prescribed for sleep disorders like insomnia. The ingredient was not listed on the product's packaging, constituting a serious breach of UK food supplement regulations.

According to the MHRA investigation, 2 batches of the gummies were found to contain the drug. The batches which were tested are reported to have been found to contain between:- 1.5mg and 1.7mg of melatonin. Health experts highlight that this amount exceeds the typical starting dose of 1mg prescribed by doctors for children, posing a potential risk of adverse effects.

The agency is now working closely with online retailers to ensure all listings of the Nutrition Ignition Kids Magnesium Glycinate Gummies are removed from sale immediately.

Melatonin can cause a range of side effects, particularly in children, including:-
  •     Drowsiness.

  •     Headaches.

  •     Dizziness.

  •     Nausea.

  •     Abdominal pains.

  •     Hyperactivity.
While the MHRA has stated that no serious side effects were observed during their studies and that lasting harm is not expected, they are strongly advising consumers to stop using the product as a precaution.

What Should I Do If I Have This Product?

The MHRA has issued clear guidance for anyone who has purchased these gummies:-
  • Stop Use Immediately - Do not give any more of the gummies to your children.

  • Secure the Product - Store the container securely, in a tamper proof location, well out of the reach of children.

  • Safe Disposal - Take the product to a local pharmacy for safe and proper disposal. Do not throw it in household waste.

  • Seek Medical Advice - If your child has consumed the gummies and is experiencing any adverse effects or you have any concerns, consult your GP or a pharmacist for advice.

  • Report Side Effects - Any suspected side effects should be reported to the MHRA through the official Yellow Card reporting system, which helps regulators monitor the safety of medicines and healthcare products..
