LIVERPOOL City Council is launching a major lighting upgrade this week, bringing smarter, greener streetlights to the area around the Bramley Moore Dock.
Phase 1 of the works, delivered by contractor McCann, will run from:- Monday, 20 October to Tuesday 11 November 2025 and cover 11 key streets connecting the City Centre to the new Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The lighting upgrade was undertaken to address increased demand and changing patterns of road use associated with events at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
In response, the Council’s Cabinet agreed to allocate £1.5 million of funding to deliver the improvements, which include the installation of modern LED lighting columns connected to a Central Management System (CMS).
The new lighting ensures that all road users are appropriately catered for both on event days and outside of them, aligning with current standards and expectations.
The system will allow for remote monitoring, meaning that any faults will be detected and fixed quickly and reducing the need for routine inspections.
The lights will be able to be dimmed remotely, which will save energy at times where the routes are not being heavily used, such as late at night.
Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity said:- “These upgrades are a vital step in making Liverpool’s waterfront safer, smarter and more sustainable. We’ve listed to residents and stakeholders, and we’re delivering lighting that meets the needs of a growing City, enhancing visibility, reducing energy use, and supporting our commitment to achieving net zero.”
Waterfront Councillor, Dave Hanratty, said:- “I welcome this investment by the Council, which is much needed in the area. Residents and visitors have raised concerns over the lack of effective street lighting in the area due to its historic nature, and this upgrade will make a safer environment in an expanding residential area."
Phase 2 of the project will extend the upgrades to the 10 Streets area, with works scheduled from 4-18 November 2025.
